Almost heaven

"So kiss me and smile for me..."

UPDATE from the mailbag [the hatemail is better than the feature itself!]:

Dear Mark, I feel nothing but pity for you and your dead brain. If you could not see the goodness and the humanity in John Denver, you are truly to be pitied. Yes, John made mistakes! Have you never made a mistake? I am 85 years old and would love to beat you over the head with my walker. I love John Denver!

Google hits for John Denver: 30,100,000.
Google hits for Mark Desrosiers: 231,000
After you are dead for 8 years, you won't be remembered as is John Denver.Google hits for you will be zero.
Furthermore,John is not in Hades. He was too good a man,to end up there.
The peacemaker, environmentalist, humanitarian AND musical genius didn't even touch the water. He went straight to Heaven.

Of course, Mark DisRosenears or whatever his name is here, is among the many who disliked John Denver from the get go. Why? It wouldn't have mattered if John Denver would have changed his lyrics to the trashy sort, had his band screeching from the rafters and dressed in TED NUGENT WANNABE attire, John Denver had wings and they would have been seen under the flaming facade of what all the other "ROCK" stars would have worn and displayed to their wacky, uninformed fanatical, cotton mouthed, slitty eyed fans. [snip]
Mr. Derosierears, you can ride your heavy rock unicycle down to Hades and be greeted with the likes of those who would have preferred Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" knowing full well that you took the flight of stairs leading the opposite direction. For in judging a man such as John Denver not only in his former life, but his blessed new life as well, you may consider the fact that the "HIGHWAY TO HELL" is going to be a very hot and bumpy ride. ROTS O' RUCK Mr. "I have no taste in music". There. That is easier to spell.

Mr. Derosiers, apparently when you woke the morning you wrote the review of John Denver, your significant other didn't give you any, if you HAVE a significent other of which I very much doubt. Otherwise there's no reason for this vindictive,mean-spirited critique you've posted in Pop Matters.
I'm sure In a Gadda Da Vida/Welcome to my Nighmare etal will never be played at anyone's funeral, but Perhaps Love as played at television star's Jerry Orbach's. AC/DC et al may be played at a boozed drug infested wake but never at anyone's memorial to act as a memory of their loved one. Maybe a nighmare but never a good memory.

Fr Our beloved John Denver & his millions of fans,,here's ahug.!! And a baseball bat right across the bridge of your nose!!!! Slugger 2 from ME..No wonder U dont have any friends. Folks in John Denver land, lets sue this sad. sick-minded creep, who thinks he is "good". I pity his wife and children,if any. Show your self U Coward, stop hiding behind a fire wall. EVERY ONE , BOYCOTT mark desrosiers, IF that is his real name???} I sincerely hope U find peace some day in your awful miserable life. Answer my email you asshole.

Dang spammers!

What a weird synchro--the Denver re-issues were released in the US on my birthday...I never really dug him all that much--but "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and "Take Me Home.." seem catchy enough, I suppose.

I ended a post at CP once with "peace, love and Bobby Sherman." Within a day the president of the Bobby Sherman Fan Club had written to recruit me into their ranks.

Forget the harsh words, this octegenarian wants to jump your bones.

Sly, I'll have to admit that "Take Me Home, Country Roads" still hits me as one of the best singles ever, though listening thoughtfully to his other stuff often came close to torture. That man's work has not aged well.

I still kinda dig Cat Stevens though. And Joni Mitchell, not sure if she's even in the same league.

Also I just want to say for the record, that the last two lines of the feature were not written by me.

Norwegianity, apparently Bobby Sherman is now a bleedin' sheriff? I'd hate to face off against this massive beergut in San Bernardino County today...

I miss the hate mail I used to get. Thanks for posting yours.

John Denver beat his wife and was twice arrested for drunk driving. Guess we will all get to hang out with him in hell!

THAT's a massive beergut?

Remind me to sit on your lap next time you visit Drinking Liberally and I'll show you a massive beergut...

Dear Mark, (if that is in fact your real name)

Do not despair. We support you as you suffer the slings and arrows of outragous oppression from closed minded Pollyannas of Everywheresville, USA.

It aint easy supporting yourself and your family (if in fact you have any), while perfecting your craft and maintaining some semblance of integrity.

Every now and then you have to crucify a martyr to pay the billz.

Stay strong, bro.
